What am I? Who am I? - Part 2

By Britton Zirkle - Guest Writer

Let's continue with, how I came to know what I am and who I am.

These are questions that everyone wants to answer and many people struggle with the difference between these two questions, but there is a difference and it’s important. Now let's define, "who" we are and more precisely, who we choose to be.

Who am I?

This is a very simple question of accountability and measurement, but it can be profoundly difficult to answer in honesty. God made you what you are for His purpose. It is our job to identify both the attributes and gifts that each of us has in Christ and the ones that make us unique. It is also our responsibility to give ourselves over to what God designed us to be.

Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.

Asking yourself who you are is the yardstick. Are you, at any given moment, being what God made you to be?  The answer to this question is who you are. Are you, through faith, producing the fruit of the Spirit, by the unique traits and gifts God created in you?

You have patience, but are you being patient? You have joy, but are you being joyful? You have strength, are you being strong? You were made as a wife, husband, child, etc… but are you living that in a way that is pleasing to and glorifying God? Or, are you going through the motions, or even resisting?

As you grow in your relationship with the Lord and continue to honestly ask yourself "who" you are on a regular basis, who you are will come closer to aligning with "what" you are. When they align, you can know that you are being exactly what God made you to be.

Take Action!

Do you know "what" you are in Christ? If so, then "who" do you choose to be?
What we are, we find in the scriptures as a new creation in Christ. Who we are is who we choose to be. We can continue as our old self or as our new self. Think about which "you," that you spend most of your time thinking like.
Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God--truly righteous and holy. - Ephesians 4:21-24 NLT
